About Kolkata Port Trust
The port of Kolkata is the oldest port trust and is constructed by the British East India Company. There are two different port systems. One is a deep water dock at Haldia dock complex and the other one is Kolkata Docks at Kolkata. The premier port in British India was the Kolkata Port Trust in the 19th century which was decreased after the independence due to the partition of Bengal and inactivity of economic in Eastern India.
Initially, the port of Kolkata was considered to protect and promote the British colonial interest. The post which was earlier considered as the most important port in the country which remains the same has been rightly called the gateway of Eastern India and is the guiding factor in commerce and trade.
Port of Kolkata is only the riverine Major Port of India which is located 232 Kms upstream from the Sea headsAmongst the Major Port of India, the Port of Kolkata have the most longest navigational channel. Kolkata Port has the largest kind of vessel which can be flooded to allow a load to be floated in then can be drained to allow that load to come to rest on a dry platform which is called as a dry dock. The dry docks are used to maintain or repair needs of the narrow basin calling on the Eastern Port of India.In the year 2013-2014, the Kolkata port was handling the highest number of vessel among all Indian Major Port.
